For Cataract Surgery
When should I come in for an exam post-surgery?
Post-surgery exams are regularly conducted
- 1 day after the surgery
- 1st week after the surgery
- 1st month after the surgery
- 3rd month after the surgery
How do I clean my eyes?
- Use antibiotic drops prescribed by the doctor whenever you experience itchiness or tearing up after the surgery.
- Use a clean towel or tissue around the eyes when cleaning your eyes
- The patient may use cold water and clean cotton gauze or face towels to clean the eyes after the surgery.
Note: Avoid using hard cotton yarn as it easily falls apart and collects dust.
Should I protect my eyes after surgery?
Yes!
- Protective glasses is a must after the surgery to avoid the wind and dust entering your the eyes.
- Sunglasses may be used to replace the protective glasses provided by the Japan Eye Center
- Wearing hospital protective goggles is a must before going to bed. This must be done for the next 3 days after surgery to avoid accidentally rubbing of eyes while asleep.
When can I resume work?
- Patients may return to work the day after surgery. However, avoid heavy work activities to prevent post-treatment complications.
- Patients may also work with screens such as computers and phones as long as it is comfortable to do so. Remember to rest your eyes every 20 minutes.
Do I need to take medication?
Yes, kindly follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor. If not followed, there is a higher risk of infection and may affect how fast you recover.
- Use oral medication starting from the evening of your surgery date.
- If you are taking medications other than the cataract surgery prescription, you may continue to take them as usual.
How do I use my eye drops?
- Before using your eye drops, please wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
- Gently and slowly wipe around your eyes with a clean gauze pad.
- Do not touch the eyes or eyelashes with the tip of the dropper.
- Do not use eye drops continuously, each eye drop must be 10 mins apart.
- If the eye drops overflow, use a clean cloth or a soft tissue to absorb the excess eye drops. Avoid getting the fluids back into the eyes as this might cause an infection.
After your Cataract Surgery
1 DAY AFTER
Patients may resume:
- Showering below the neck.
- Washing hair parlor-style
- Sleeping in full stomach
1 WEEK AFTER
Patients may resume:
- Driving
- Doing light exercises
2 WEEKS AFTER
Patients may resume:
- Wearing foundation in their make-up
- Gentle face cleaning
1 MONTH AFTER
Patients may resume:
- Sleeping with pets
- Consumption of alcoholic drinks
- Strenuous exercise at the gym
Note: Avoid using eye ointment that has been opened for more than 20 days even if the medication in the vial remains.
2 MONTHS AFTER
Patients may resume:
- Swimming
- Using of eye drops until it is finished
